Elementary Program

Lower Elementary | Grades 1-3

Is your child ready for more?

Is your elementary-aged child curious, capable, and eager to learn, but not always challenged or inspired at school?

At Franklin Montessori, our Lower Elementary program (ages 6–9) is designed for children who thrive when learning feels meaningful, engaging, and connected to the real world.

Families new to Montessori are warmly welcomed — many children begin their Montessori journey in the elementary years.

Learning that truly engages

Elementary students are natural explorers who want to understand how and why things work. In our Montessori classroom, learning is active, purposeful, and driven by curiosity.

Students engage in meaningful academic work through:

  • Hands-on learning across core subjects

  • Research, projects, and collaborative exploration

  • Individualized lessons that meet each child where they are

  • Opportunities to build critical thinking and confidence

A Community Where Children Are Known

In our mixed-age classroom, students learn with and from one another — building empathy, leadership, and strong friendships along the way.

Children are encouraged to:

  • Collaborate respectfully

  • Take responsibility for their learning

  • Grow socially as well as academically

Freedom to move, freedom to focus

Rather than spending the day seated at a desk, students choose from a variety of work spaces designed to support comfort and concentration — including floor tables, child-sized desks, standing-height work areas, and quiet carpet spaces for reading and reflection.

This freedom of movement helps children stay engaged, comfortable, and ready to learn.

Learning beyond the classroom

Children thrive when learning extends beyond indoor spaces. Outdoor time is an essential part of the Lower Elementary experience, offering opportunities for movement, exploration, and connection with the natural world.

Students spend time outdoors observing, collaborating, and engaging in active play — supporting physical well-being, creativity, and renewed focus for academic work.

Access to outdoor environments allows children to recharge, explore curiosity firsthand, and develop a deeper relationship with the world around them.

A Day in the Life

Each day balances focused academic work, movement, independence, and community connection. The predictable rhythm of the Montessori classroom allows children to work deeply while still enjoying collaboration, outdoor time, and moments to recharge.

Arrival & Morning Connection | 8:45am - 9:05am

Children are welcomed into a calm environment where they greet classmates, organize materials, and prepare for the day ahead.

Morning Montessori Work Cycle | 9:05am - 12:00pm

The uninterrupted work cycle is the heart of the Montessori Elementary experience. Students engage deeply in academic work, choosing lessons and projects guided by the teacher while working independently or collaboratively.  Lessons naturally move between indoor and outdoor environments, allowing students to learn through observation, movement, and real-world exploration.

Lunch & Community Time | 12:00pm - 12:30pm

Students relax, recharge, and connect socially while practicing independence and responsibility within the classroom community.

Outdoor Recess & Exploration | 12:30pm - 1:15pm

Movement, exploration, and play refresh and reset students for afternoon learning.

Afternoon Work Cycle | 1:15 - 3:00pm

Students continue projects, receive lessons, and build independence.

Dismissal & Extended Day | 3:00pm

Students transition home or into Extended Day programming.
