Elementary Program

Program Overview
Franklin Montessori Rockville is proud to introduce our new Lower Elementary program for children ages 6–9 (grades 1–3)—a natural and exciting next step for children ready to deepen their learning, independence, and confidence.

Rooted in Maria Montessori’s vision of “education for life,” our Lower Elementary program builds on the strong foundation established in Primary and supports children as they grow into capable, thoughtful, and engaged learners.

A Natural Progression from Primary
The Montessori Elementary years mark an important shift. Children move from concrete exploration to deeper understanding, using reason, imagination, and curiosity to make sense of the world around them.

At Franklin, our Lower Elementary classroom is carefully designed to support this transition. Students take greater ownership of their work, collaborate with peers, and engage in meaningful academic study—while still benefiting from hands-on materials, individualized lessons, and the guidance of Montessori-trained teachers.

Engaging, Purposeful Academic Work
Lower Elementary students are eager to ask questions, explore big ideas, and understand why things work. Our program supports academic growth across all core areas—reading, writing, mathematics, science, and cultural studies—while encouraging critical thinking and creativity.

Through research projects, group work, and guided exploration, students learn to analyze information, make connections across subjects, and take pride in their accomplishments. Learning is active, engaging, and designed to spark genuine interest and motivation.

A Strong Sense of Community
Children ages 6–9 are highly social and gain confidence through meaningful relationships with peers. In our mixed-age Lower Elementary classroom, collaboration is central to daily life.

Students work together, share ideas, and learn to resolve challenges respectfully. Older children naturally step into leadership roles, while younger students benefit from observing and learning alongside their peers. This structure builds empathy, responsibility, and a strong sense of belonging.

Growing Character & Responsibility
As children enter the Elementary years, they develop a strong interest in fairness, justice, and rules. Our Lower Elementary program supports this moral development by helping students understand their role within a larger community.

Children participate in discussions, group decision-making, and real-world problem-solving—building responsibility, accountability, and respect for others. These experiences help students grow not only academically, but also socially and ethically.

Building Confidence for What’s Next
The Lower Elementary years are a time of rapid intellectual and personal growth. At Franklin Montessori Rockville, students develop strong academic skills, perseverance, independence, and confidence—preparing them for continued success in upper elementary and beyond.
